How Eating Too Fast Can Lead To SIBO

We’ve all been there done that! We get busy, are in a hurry, or are just super hungry and we shovel food into our mouths too quickly. This can cause more problems for our body than we realize especially if eating too fast is normal for a person. Not only do we risk the chance of choking on our food but harming our gut health on top of that. Eating too quickly every once in a while doesn’t pose such a risk but one never knows when a situation might arise.

Eating too fast, especially often, can lead to indigestion, acid reflux, and discomfort. Often times, people who eat too fast are taking too big of bites which heavily and negatively impacts digestion. As we eat the secretion of saliva and digestive enzymes are produced in order to begin the digestion process but when our bites are too big there is a lack of enough saliva and digestive enzymes. This means there is an imbalanced ratio of food to digestive enzymes and saliva. This starts a sketchy roller coaster ride in our gut. The digestion process is going to be more difficult and undigested food particles will remain inside of the gut.

Another issue with eating too fast is overeating. Overeating is a very common result of eating our food too quickly. It takes at least 20 minutes for our brain to register that the stomach is full. When the food in our gut isn’t broken down enough there become many complications for the gut. The undigested food that remains in the intestines can lead to toxin and bacteria build-up. This build-up leads to a downward spiral of symptoms, effects, and gut health issues which includes SIBO or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

As the undigested food is left behind a collection of toxic sludge follows. Even though our gut relies on beneficial bacteria the undigested food welcomes bad bacteria and left over toxins.
